Learn how to spot zero-force members in a truss in seconds, then solve the rest of a roof truss with the method of joints, step by step. Most students solve every joint in a truss, one after another. But in many roof trusses, several members carry no force at all for a given loading, and you can find them just by looking, before you write a single equation. In this video we use the zero-force member rules to strip the truss down to the members that matter, then finish the job with the method of joints. The rules both come from joint equilibrium. At an unloaded joint with only two members that aren't in line, both members are zero-force members. At an unloaded joint with three members, where two are in a straight line, the third member is zero. The condition students forget is that the joint must have no external load and no support. We also show how one zero member can reveal the next, and why these members are still built: they brace long members against buckling and start carrying load as soon as the loading changes. After finding the zero-force members, we take moments to find the support reactions, draw the free body diagram of a support joint, assume every member is in tension, and solve for the rafter and bottom-chord forces. A negative answer means compression. Symmetry and a final check at the apex finish the solution. What's covered: Zero-force member rules for trusses, with the reasons behind them Finding zero-force members in a roof truss, step by step Support reactions using moments Method of joints: tension and compression in truss members Why zero-force members are still needed (bracing and changing loads) Useful for: statics, engineering mechanics, structural analysis, truss analysis and free body diagrams.
