They were slender and elongated, with leaves featuring pronounced serrated edges and very small flower buds; these characteristics differed significantly from those of traditional ornamental rose varieties. I realized these might be "wild-type" shoots. Since cultivated roses are grafted, wild-type shoots often emerge from below the graft union; they lack ornamental value and consume excessive nutrients. Consequently, I pruned away a batch of these stems. However, not all of those pruning decisions were correct. The rose shown in the video is a grafted variety. During spring pruning, three robust stems had emerged directly from the base, and I pruned two of them. Now that the rose is producing its summer blooms, the consequences of those pruning choices have become clear. The retained stem: Retaining this stem was the right decision. It was a new shoot emerging from the base—capable of gradually replacing older stems and serving as a primary source of future blooms. Because it wasn't pruned in the spring, it now bears over a dozen flower buds and is blooming beautifully. The incorrectly pruned stem: One of the two stems I pruned was actually a healthy shoot intended for the plant's natural renewal. However, because I mistakenly cut it back in the spring, it now has significantly fewer flower buds. The correctly pruned stem: The other stem I pruned in the spring was a wild-type shoot, which should have been cut off right at ground level. At the time, I only shortened it near the base, and now the wild shoot has grown back. How to distinguish them: As mentioned, wild-type shoots differ markedly from cultivated variety shoots. If the entire rose plant is weak and all the stems are slender, look at the size of the flower buds. Ornamental roses produce large buds even on thin stems, whereas wild-type buds are tiny—about the size of a pea. Once identified, you can cut that stem off close to the ground.
