🔗 Warm, fed and lit when the power's out — When the Power Goes Out, part of The Holler Winter Collection: https://www.OpalRowe.com/home
Opal Rowe grew up in the Kentucky mountains before the power lines ever reached her creek, and she still keeps her kitchen light burning without a generator. In this video she counts down 30 old Appalachian ways to keep the lights on, the water running and the food cold when the power goes out, the plain common sense her mama and daddy ran a whole house on. Every one is something a senior living alone can do this week, from a penny on a frozen cup that tells you if your freezer thawed in the night to a light in the window that lets a neighbor know you're all right. And all the while, out in her shed sits a little thing the size of a coffee can, with a belt around it and two wires to a battery. It cost her sixty dollars, and she won't say what it is until near the very end.
In this one, Opal covers:
• The penny-on-a-frozen-cup test that tells you come morning whether your freezer food went bad
• How to run a few lights and a phone off the car in your driveway, and the one rule that keeps it safe
• Water with no pump: the spring box, the barrel set up high, and filling the bathtub before the storm
• The generator and battery mistakes that hurt folks every winter, and the "free electricity" machine ads to shut the door on
• The sixty-dollar thing in her shed that keeps her kitchen light burning, and what it is at last
Tell Opal in the comments where you're watching from, and who in your family kept the lights on before the lines came.
