Van Halen's Early Years w/Greg Renoff

Before Van Halen became one of the biggest rock bands on the planet, they were a hungry Southern California band building their sound, their following, and the blueprint for everything that came next. From the Mix Tapes archives, we’re bringing back our conversation with Greg Renoff, author of Van Halen Rising, for a deep dive into the fascinating early history of Van Halen. Greg takes us inside the years before the fame: the clubs, backyard parties, relentless gigging, the development of the classic Van Halen lineup, and the path that eventually led them to their landmark debut album. We also discuss legendary producer Ted Templeman and Greg’s book Ted Templeman: A Platinum Producer’s Life in Music, exploring Templeman’s role in capturing the sound that helped turn Van Halen into a phenomenon. This one is essentially a Van Halen history lesson from one of the writers who has researched the band’s beginnings more deeply than almost anyone. If you love Van Halen, classic hard rock, music history, Eddie Van Halen, David Lee Roth, Ted Templeman, or the stories behind legendary records, this one belongs on your playlist. 📼 FROM THE VAULT brings previously audio-only Mix Tapes conversations to YouTube for the first time. We’ll dig into the archives and resurrect interviews and episodes you may have missed.
