Back from the depths to feel the sun once more.
Filmed live during Departure Songs recording sessions at Studios 301 in 2015.
After spending ten years lost in the depths of dropbox, the video of us recording Last Dive has surfaced again. This was shot in the same sessions as A Gallant Gentleman and was always meant to be a follow up to that video. Initially I wanted this to be an overly ambitious animation project, but after releasing Departure Songs, life took off in many ways and the it was abandoned. Ironically we’re more busy now than we were then, but still really wanted this to be completed.
I had already done a bunch of art frames for it back in 2015 as part of the original DS artwork. I was planning to do much more having a kid and a job and a touring band put a stop to that. Carl Whitbread (WLTS, Lo!) jumped in and animated what I had already designed, and we patched together a wonderful time capsule and homage to that era of the band.
This song was inspired by cave diver, David Shaw, and his final dive where he attempted to retrieve the body of a fellow diver from Boesmansgat cave in Cape Town. Due to the immense pressure at depth and complications with the dive, he passed out and died while down in the cave. Eventually both bodies were retrieved and, in a sadly poetic way, were brought up together as he had intended.
Thanks for watching
