Oxymercuration–Demercuration Reaction – Mechanism Explained | Alkenes | BSc Chemistry | Easy Explanation
In this video, we will understand one of the most important reactions of alkenes — Oxymercuration–Demercuration.
This reaction is widely used to convert alkenes → alcohols without carbocation rearrangement.
A simple, exam-oriented explanation with mechanism and examples is provided — perfect for BSc Chemistry, Semester 1–2.
📌 Topics Covered
What is Oxymercuration–Demercuration reaction?
Addition of water across double bond
Step-by-step mechanism of oxymercuration
Formation of Mercurinium ion
Nucleophilic attack by water
Formation of organomercury alcohol
Demercuration using NaBH₄
Markovnikov addition
Why no rearrangement occurs
Important exam questions with solutions
Examples for BSc / Competitive exams
🧪 Reaction Summary
Alkene + Hg(OAc)₂ + H₂O → (Oxymercuration) → Organomercury Alcohol
Organomercury Alcohol + NaBH₄ → (Demercuration) → Alcohol
This gives a Markovnikov alcohol without carbocation shift — making it one of the cleanest hydration methods.
⭐ Why This Reaction Is Important?
✔ Gives Markovnikov product
✔ No rearrangement
✔ No strong acids needed
✔ Works on most alkenes
✔ Very high yield
