What if the real strength of dyspraxia isn’t a “superpower” at all, but the persistence built from having to keep trying? In this Divergent Discussion, Ryan Hoare and Michelle Ridsdale explore the idea of “dyspraxic grit” – the persistence that can develop from repeatedly navigating a world that isn’t always designed with dyspraxic people in mind. Drawing on Ryan’s lived experience of dyspraxia and ADHD, they explore the effort that can sit behind seemingly ordinary tasks, from handwriting, sport and driving to navigating work and everyday life. They also discuss the impact of being expected to keep trying without the right understanding or support, and why persistence shouldn’t mean having to continually push through unnecessary barriers. The conversation also looks at workplace adjustments, accessibility and the value of focusing on the barriers a person is experiencing rather than relying solely on a diagnosis. From flexible working and assistive technology to simple individual strategies, they explore how the right support can make everyday environments more accessible. Together, they invite us to look beyond the stereotype of dyspraxia as simply being “clumsy” and recognise the effort, adaptation and persistence that can sit behind the things others may take for granted – while considering how greater awareness, flexibility and individualised support can help people find ways of doing things that work for them.
