Join us for the Kennedy Human Rights Center’s Board and Leadership Council Book Club Conversation at 1:30 pm ET/10:30 am PT on October 28th, where we will be highlighting Kerry Kennedy’s book, 'Ethel Kennedy: The Extraordinary Life and Bold Legacy.'
When her husband Sen. Robert F. Kennedy was killed in 1968, Ethel Skakel Kennedy—then pregnant with their eleventh child—drew national attention for her grace, dignity, and resolute commitment to honor her husband’s life and work. As her daughter Kerry witnessed, Ethel was much more than a dutiful wife and keeper of Bobby’s legacy. She was courageous, curious, compassionate, boisterous, and witty, always guided by faith and an instinct for speaking truth to power. She showed up and she spoke out.
In her latest book, Kerry delves into her own memories, her family’s recollections, and her mother’s private papers, describing:
Ethel’s family’s journey from working-class Chicago to life in tony Greenwich, CT.
Combining political and civic engagement with raising a large family.
Life on the family properties in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts, and at Hickory Hill, Virginia estate where Kerry and her ten siblings grew up amidst presidents and politicians, Olympians, and Hollywood stars, and a rambunctious menagerie of pets.
Moments of unimaginable pain and loss and how her faith carried her through those dark times.
Ethel’s unflagging commitment to global human rights causes that carried on through the decade and her powerful, successful advocacy on behalf of those whose rights were violated.
