Video of the budgies, recorded in September 2025. The budgies were fed rolled oats. These budgies have often been fed oats, whole wheat, or even whole barley. But it's a bit difficult for them to eat these grains, because they're quite hard when they're whole and dry. Therefore, before feeding them to budgies, we usually soak the grains in clean water for at least three hours, and longer if you want softer grains. Then, we drain them and let them sit until there's no water dripping. This process is quite time-consuming. We usually start preparing this in the morning if we want to feed our budgies during the day. Feeding whole grains is an option for us to reduce feed costs, as whole grains are half the price of regular white millet here. However, feeding soaked, moist grains contains a high water content. This can lead to waterier droppings and make them susceptible to beak stains. This risk can be reduced if the cage is large enough, has good air circulation, and has direct sunlight. If the cage is small or indoors, it's best to reconsider, as soaked grains can have a sour and musty odor. Furthermore, feeding soaked whole grains to budgie parents can cause runny droppings in their chicks, which can be detrimental if left on their rear end and not dried for a long time. It can also stick to the chick's beak, drying out, and preventing it from opening its beak. Feeding your budgie wheat, barley, and oats is a great way to increase their nutritional diversity. However, considering the aforementioned consequences, you should reconsider giving your budgie soaked whole grains. While this can be done in small amounts, it's perfectly acceptable. However, the long processing time for such small results is disappointing. As an alternative, you can give your budgie rolled oats. I've tried this many times, and they've been eating it. It's quite good. Unlike soaked whole grains, which must be fed to your budgie immediately and consumed within 24 hours, rolled oats can be stored for a long time. You can store rolled oats in a dry, sealed container, and they'll keep them fresh for a long time. However, the price of rolled oats around here is generally the same as white millet.
