Pablo Picasso has this famous quote “art is a lie that makes us realize the truth”.
And while using this quote is a guaranteed way to be left alone at a party, there is a point to it.
It suggests that art does not represent reality literally or factually and instead uses artificial means, symbolism, and creative interpretation to bypass superficial observation and reveal deeper, essential human emotions, experiences, and insights.
And in my opinion, only a handful of games have ever reached the level of"art" quite like RDR 2.
It is a game that defies the modern industry. It is slow. It is deliberate. And it is tragic.
And over the last 2 years, I have looked at multiple facets of why this game is at this level. From the writing of its various characters to the philosophy of its world design.
So today I am putting it all together. Including analysis of 4 characters, retrospective of the world design, as well as my favorite video I’ve done so far - the lessons we can learn from this masterpiece of a game.
There are section markers in the video timeline so you can freely jump around.
