Asking Japanese MLB Stars The Important Questions...

In this interview we interviewed 2 of MLB's newest Japanese stars, Kazuma Okamoto and Tomoyuki Sugano. We also interviewed Yusuke Oshima, Kazuma's interpreter, about how he got his job! Before he was hitting home runs in Toronto, Kazuma Okamoto was a kid from Gojō, Nara, playing catch with his older brother in a family where neither parent had played baseball. He became a high school legend at Chiben Gakuen, hitting 73 career home runs and becoming only the 19th player ever to homer twice in one game at Spring Koshien. He grew up a Hanshin Tigers fan, but their rivals, the Yomiuri Giants, took him in the first round of the 2014 NPB Draft. Over 11 seasons in Tokyo, he became one of Japan’s most feared hitters, and manager Tatsunori Hara gave him the nickname “The Young General.” Okamoto made six All-Star teams, won three Central League home run titles, two RBI crowns, and three Golden Gloves, and hit at least 25 homers every year from 2018 to 2024. On the world stage, he homered in the 2023 World Baseball Classic final against Team USA to help Japan win gold. An elbow injury limited him to 69 games in 2025, and after that season the Giants posted him to MLB. The Blue Jays signed him to a four-year, $60 million deal in January 2026, and Toronto won out partly because he let his daughter pick her favorite MLB logo and she chose the Jays. His rookie season delivered: he hit more than 30 home runs, was named AL Rookie of the Month for June, and had his first four-hit game in September. Away from the field, he’s a huge Southern All Stars fan who has walked up to “Kibo No Wadachi” since his Giants days! トロントで本塁打を放つようになる以前、岡本和真は奈良県五條市で育った少年だった。野球経験のない両親のもとに生まれ、兄とキャッチボールをして遊ぶ日々を送っていた。智弁学園高校では伝説的な選手として名を馳せ、高校通算73本塁打を記録。春の甲子園大会では、史上19人目となる1試合2本塁打を達成した。幼い頃から阪神タイガースのファンだったが、2014年のNPBドラフト会議で、そのライバルである読売ジャイアンツから1位指名を受けた。東京での11シーズンを通じて、日本球界を代表する「最も恐れられる打者」の一人へと成長し、当時の原辰徳監督からは「若大将」という愛称で呼ばれた。 岡本はオールスターゲームに6度選出され、セ・リーグで本塁打王を3回、打点王を2回獲得したほか、ゴールデングラブ賞も3度受賞している。2018年から2024年にかけては、7年連続で25本塁打以上を記録した。国際舞台では、2023年のワールド・ベースボール・クラシック（WBC）決勝のアメリカ戦で本塁打を放ち、日本代表の優勝に貢献した。2025年は肘の怪我により69試合の出場にとどまったが、シーズン終了後、ジャイアンツはポスティングシステムを利用して彼のメジャーリーグ（MLB）挑戦を容認した。2026年1月、トロント・ブルージェイズと4年総額6000万ドルの契約を締結。ブルージェイズへの入団が決まった背景には、娘がMLB各球団のロゴの中からブルージェイズのものを選んだというエピソードもある。 メジャー1年目から期待に応える活躍を見せ、30本塁打以上を記録したほか、6月にはアメリカン・リーグの月間最優秀新人（ルーキー・オブ・ザ・マンス）に選出された。9月には自身初となる1試合4安打も達成している。グラウンド外では、国民的バンド「サザンオールスターズ」の大ファンとして知られており、ジャイアンツ時代から打席に向かう際の登場曲には、彼らの楽曲『希望の轍』を使用している。 Tomoyuki Sugano’s road to pro baseball started with a decision most players would never make. At Tokai University he went 37–4 with a 0.57 ERA, and he wanted to play for the Yomiuri Giants under his uncle, manager Tatsunori Hara. When the Nippon-Ham Fighters won his rights in the 2011 draft lottery instead, he turned them down and sat out a full year without pitching in an official game. The gamble paid off when the Giants made him their first pick in 2012. Over 12 seasons in Tokyo, Sugano became one of the best pitchers in Japanese baseball, going 136–74 with a 2.43 ERA and winning three Central League MVPs and two Sawamura Awards. In 2018 he won the pitching Triple Crown and threw a postseason no-hitter against the Yakult Swallows. The Giants posted him after 2020, but the pandemic froze the MLB market and he returned to Japan, a letdown he has said sometimes brought him to tears. He answered with a 15–3, 1.67 ERA season in 2024 that earned him a third MVP and finally his ticket to the majors. At 35, Sugano signed with the Baltimore Orioles and made 30 starts as an MLB rookie, finishing 10–10. In 2026 he joined the Colorado Rockies, bringing the deep pitch mix that earned him the nickname “Tommy Sugar” and his trademark command to Coors Field. 東京での12シーズンを通じて、菅野は日本球界屈指の投手へと成長した。通算成績は136勝74敗、防御率2.43を記録し、セ・リーグMVPを3度、沢村賞を2度受賞した。2018年には投手三冠を達成し、ポストシーズンでは東京ヤクルトスワローズ相手にノーヒットノーランを成し遂げた。2020年オフにはポスティングシステムを利用してメジャーリーグ（MLB）への挑戦を試みたが、パンデミックの影響でMLBの市場が停滞し、日本への残留を余儀なくされた。この時の悔しさは、時に涙を流すほどだったと本人は語っている。しかし、2024年シーズンには15勝3敗、防御率1.67という成績を残して3度目のMVPに輝き、ついにメジャーリーグへの切符を掴み取った。 35歳となった菅野はボルチモア・オリオールズと契約。MLBルーキーイヤーは30試合に先発登板し、10勝10敗という成績を残した。2026年にはコロラド・ロッキーズへ移籍し、「トミー・シュガー」の愛称の由来となった多彩な球種と、代名詞とも言える制球力を武器に、クアーズ・フィールドのマウンドに立った。 If you enjoyed this video and want to see more like it, make sure to SUBSCRIBE!
