Maa Kalua Jatra in Gosaninuagaon (Berhampur) is one of the most culturally significant and vibrant folk-religious festivals celebrated in southern Odisha. Dedicated to Maa Kalua, an incarnation of the divine feminine (Shakti) and revered Gramadevati (presiding village goddess) of Gosaninuagaon, the biennial festival mirrors the fervor and ritual grandeur of Brahmapur famed Maa Budhi Thakurani Yatra
The festival is traditionally celebrated once every two years (typically during the Odia month of Chaitra or Baisakha, spanning spring and early summer). Similar to the tradition of Maa Budhi Thakurani, the core premise of the Jatra centers on Maa Kalua visiting her maternal home (Bapa Ghara) from her permanent temple altar.
During the festival period (which lasts several weeks), the Goddess stays at a temporarily erected sanctum (Asthayi Mandap), where thousands of devotees gather daily to offer prayers, vows, and traditional offerings.
Subha Khunti Sthapana: The ceremonial commencement begins weeks in advance with the erection of the auspicious wooden post (Subha Khunti), signaling the official countdown and neighborhood preparations.
Agyan Mala & The Divine Procession: Priests retrieve the garland of divine command (Agyan Mala) from the main shrine, leading the sacred procession that escorts the Goddess's deity/ghata to her temporary abode amidst chants, ghanta (traditional brass gongs), and fireworks.
Nagar Parikrama (Street Visits) in a decorated palanquin (Vimana) through different streets and lanes (sahi) of Gosaninuagaon. Families decorate their verandas with alpana (rangoli) and offer coconut water, flowers, and sweets.
Bahuda Jatra (Return Journey): At the end of the festival period, Maa Kalua bids an emotional farewell to her maternal house and returns in a grand late-night procession to her permanent temple altar.
