Why is Finland the happiest country in the world? A Chinese-American living in Turku, Finland breaks down the real reasons — with actual costs compared to the US. If you've ever wondered why Finland keeps earning the title of world's happiest country, the answer isn't just good coffee or beautiful forests — it's the infrastructure built around every stage of life. From the moment a baby is born, Finnish families receive a maternity grant (a baby box packed with essentials or €170 in cash), paid pregnancy leave up to 40 days before the due date, and a hospital birth that costs around €200 total. In the US, that same birth can cost $2,000 or more out of pocket — and there's no pregnancy leave. What does life in Finland actually cost for a family? Daycare here is subsidized and capped at €200 per month per child, regardless of how many hours your child attends. Our family previously paid $2,300 every single month for two kids in US daycare. Finnish schools serve free hot lunches, and university education is free for Finnish residents. The sauna — and its proven mental health benefits — is built into nearly every home and apartment building. Summers include mandatory paid vacation for everyone, including daycare-aged children. And retirement comes with a monthly pension. Is Finland perfect? No. But after living here in Turku with my family, the difference in daily quality of life is real and measurable.
