In April, a London think tank said that if Britain were an American state, it would rank last, below Mississippi. Mississippi's governor replied: "Bless your heart." So is it true?
Britain led the Industrial Revolution, and in 2007 it produced more per person than the United States, measured in dollars. Today it's about 64 cents on the dollar. We follow the money on a 3D map. Mississippi grew the cotton that Lancashire's mills spun, and spent nearly a century at the bottom before casinos, car plants and a reading turnaround. Britain went through the pound's slide, a productivity slowdown, too few homes, HS2, Hinkley Point C and North Sea oil. Then we take London out, and run the Pocket Check, because GDP isn't money in anyone's pocket.
