In Episode 150, Living Dead to Sin, Walking The Text founder Brad Gray examines the season of Lent. Originally a season of preparation for baptism, Lent is the 46 days from Ash Wednesday to Silent Saturday during which followers of Jesus make concentrated time to examine their inner lives so they can live in the fullness of the resurrection.
But it’s helpful to have an image or a passage to anchor us through the season of Lent, and Romans 6:11 is an ideal text: “So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.” Paul is trying to help the followers of Jesus in Rome understand the implications of the new life they’d received in Jesus. Yes, they’d received new life, but old habits die hard.
Unfortunately, many of us excuse or rationalize our sin by saying things like, “I’m a sinner saved by grace.” This is true, but not entirely in the way we often use it. According to the Apostle Paul, following Jesus is about making a concentrated effort to root out those things in our lives that don’t belong. Lent is a season of preparation and refinement where we pay attention to the ways we’re making a mess of ourselves. By the end of Episode 150, Living Dead to Sin, you’ll be challenged to ask, “What in my life needs to die so that I can step out of the darkness and into the light of Christ?”
