In this video, we find the support reactions for a simply supported beam carrying two point loads.
The beam is supported by a pin at A and a roller at B, with a 12 kN load and a 6 kN load acting at different positions along the beam. The reactions at the supports are unknown and need to be calculated.
We first identify the possible reaction forces at the pin and roller supports. We then take moments about A to calculate the vertical reaction at B, before using vertical equilibrium to find the vertical reaction at A. Finally, horizontal equilibrium is used to determine the horizontal reaction.
The calculated support reactions are:
Ay = 9 kN
By = 9 kN
Ax = 0 kN
