Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg: The Man Who Stopped an Empire In the fifteenth century, the Ottoman Empire stood at the height of its power. Constantinople fell in 1453, and one Balkan kingdom after another was absorbed into the Sultan's domain. Yet in the mountains of Albania, a single commander resisted the empire for a quarter of a century. Gjergj Kastrioti, known to history as Skanderbeg, was taken to the Ottoman court as a hostage, educated in its military tradition, and rose to become one of the Sultan's most capable officers. In 1443 he broke with the empire, seized the fortress of Krujë, and united the Albanian nobility in the League of Lezhë. Over the following twenty-five years he defeated army after army, withstood the sieges of both Murad II and Mehmed the Conqueror, and earned recognition across Europe as a defender of Christendom. This documentary follows his life from hostage to national hero, and examines the legacy that endures in Albania's flag, its memory, and its identity to this day.
