Margaret Ray: David Letterman’s Dangerous Stalker

A rising late-night icon meets a relentless fixation. What began as fan mail turns into break-ins, a stolen Porsche, and one chilling moment at a bedroom doorway that changed everything. This episode of The Stalker Files traces Margaret Mary Ray’s delusional obsession with David Letterman and her later fixation on astronaut Story Musgrave. From the Lincoln Tunnel toll stop where she claimed to be “Mrs. David Letterman,” to Connecticut’s 1993 anti-stalking law, to a surreal 3 a.m. hose-shower outside Musgrave’s home, the case reveals how visibility can invite dangerous attention. Experts unpack how schizophrenia, untreated and stigmatized, blurred reality, while friends recall the stark difference medication made. You’ll hear the letters, the courtroom chaos, the media’s role, and the moment Letterman finally chose to prosecute. How did a smart, funny Midwestern mother become synonymous with celebrity stalking? And why did the target shift from a late-night legend to a NASA hero? Watch to understand the human cost, the legal ripple effects, and the haunting choices no headline ever explained.
