Double Dragon II: The Revenge is the NES version of Technōs Japan's classic 1988 arcade beat 'em up and the sequel to the original Double Dragon. Originally released for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1990, this version expands upon the arcade game with additional content, stages, story elements, and gameplay features. After the events of the first Double Dragon, Billy and Jimmy Lee set out to take revenge on the Shadow Warriors. Players fight their way through a variety of dangerous environments, battling groups of enemies, martial artists, ninjas, and challenging bosses along the way. The NES version features nine missions, each offering different environments and obstacles. The game takes the action beyond the streets with stages featuring locations such as a helicopter, an underwater base, a forest, and a mansion. Between missions, story sequences help move the adventure forward toward its final confrontation. The combat system is one of the game's biggest improvements over the original NES Double Dragon. Billy and Jimmy can attack enemies in either direction, making it possible to quickly turn around and deal with enemies approaching from behind. The game also features a variety of special attacks, including the spinning kick, uppercut, and flying knee. Another major addition is simultaneous two-player co-op, allowing two players to fight through the missions together as Billy and Jimmy. The NES version also includes different two-player options, including modes with and without friendly fire.
