Leaders of the BRICS nations are meeting in New Delhi on Saturday for a summit focused on trade, investment and global conflicts, as the bloc seeks a bigger role in shaping the global agenda for emerging and developing countries. Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in New Delhi on Saturday to participate, alongside the leaders of India, Russia, and Iran, in a summit dominated by issues of conflict, trade, and energy. Xi’s attendance is in itself significant, as this is his first visit to the country since 2019, marking a major step in the slow process of rapprochement between two rival nations, six years after a bloody military standoff along their disputed border in the Himalayas. Relations between the two nuclear-armed Asian giants have gradually improved following their agreement to resume flights, high-level communications, and the granting of visas. Beijing affirmed on Friday that “China is ready to work with India (…) by strengthening communication, deepening cooperation, and properly addressing differences.” Prior to the summit, Modi received Iranian President Masoud Pezshkian, who said, “When a country faces political and economic pressure on its trade, energy, infrastructure, and financial system, the consequences extend beyond its borders.” Since the outbreak of the war with the U.S., Iran has been blocking the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway for global energy supplies, causing a sharp rise in oil prices that have surpassed the $100-per-barrel threshold. This war is causing a rift among BRICS members, as Russia and China continue to trade with Iran despite the severe sanctions imposed by the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump, while the United Arab Emirates cut off commercial activities, trade, and financial transactions with Iran in August after coming under Tehran's missile strikes.
