Vande Mataram” is often presented as a symbol of nationalism, but its historical roots tell a far more complex and uncomfortable story.
In this video, I critically examine Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay’s novel Anandmath, where Vande Mataram first appeared, and explore how the novel:
Portrays Muslims as enemies
Glorifies violence in the name of religion
Justifies destruction of mosques and killing of Muslims
Frames the Sanyasi movement as a militant, anti-Muslim uprising rather than a neutral freedom struggle
This is not hate, and this is not propaganda.
This is history, text, and context — explained through direct references, scholarly interpretations, and documented passages.
