Is your phone listening to you? Researchers tested 17,260 apps and found no evidence of secret recording. But the smart TV in your living room may be watching what's on its screen as often as every half second, and in most homes that feature is switched on by default. Here's what's really behind the ads that seem to read your mind, and how to switch the tracking off.
We explain how Automatic Content Recognition (ACR) lets smart TVs recognise everything on screen, even from your laptop or cable box, what one TV company sold along with households' internet addresses (according to the US Federal Trade Commission), and how your TV's data can follow you to your phone. We also look at the TV company that lost money on TVs but earned from data, the Texas lawsuits against five TV makers, and what it all means in Pakistan and India. Then the phone story: how researchers checked 17,260 apps for secret listening, why one company's "Active Listening" ad product turned out not to listen at all, and how that ad really found you.
In this video:
• ACR explained simply: how your smart TV recognises everything on screen
• Why it works even through HDMI: your laptop, cable box and games
• Your home's internet (IP) address, and what one TV company sold with it
• How your TV's data reaches your phone
• The TV company that lost money on TVs and made it back on data
• The Texas lawsuits against Sony, Samsung, LG, Hisense and TCL
• India's and Pakistan's data laws, and why you must act yourself
• How to switch it off, step by step
• The 17,260-app test, and the orange dot you can check yourself
• "Active Listening": the ad product that never listened
• So how did that ad find you? Your home's address and your own memory
• Where your voice really reaches ads: Meta AI
Sources named in the video include Northeastern University, the US Federal Trade Commission, 404 Media, University College London and UC Davis, Consumer Reports, Samsung's advertising documentation, Vizio's financial results, the Texas Attorney General, IDC and Meta. Samsung and LG settled with Texas without admitting wrongdoing; claims against other companies are allegations.
