L'Arlésienne Suite No 2 - I.Pastorale by Georges Bizet
Georges Bizet composed the incidental music for Alphonse Daudet’s play L'Arlésienne (“The Girl from Arles”) in 1872. Four years after Bizet’s death, his friend and fellow composer Ernest Guiraud compiled and arranged a second orchestral suite from the original score. The opening movement, Pastorale, evokes the calm, rustic charm and scenic landscapes of the
Provençal countryside.
The movement opens with a stately, full-ensemble theme that conveys a grounded, rustic strength. This gives way to a serene middle section featuring pastoral, singing melodies in the woodwinds, particularly the flute and the oboe, interwoven with gentle, flowing string accompaniments. Guiraud subtly balances texture and dynamics throughout the movement, alternating between warm tuttis and chamber-like dialogue, capturing the peaceful spirit of the countryside before building to a rich, harmonious close.
