King Jaja of Opobo King Jaja of Opobo (1821–1891) was a prominent 19th-century merchant, political leader, and founder of the Opobo Kingdom in what is now Rivers State, Nigeria. Born in Igboland and later associated with the Ijo/Opobo community, he rose through the trading system of the Niger Delta and became a powerful palm-oil trader. He resisted British attempts to control Opobo's trade and was eventually arrested and exiled by the British in 1887. He died in exile in 1891. Opobo Opobo is a historic riverine kingdom and community in present-day Rivers State, Nigeria, founded by King Jaja in the 19th century. It became an important center of palm-oil trade and commerce in the Niger Delta.
