Lava to Rishap Road Trip 2026 | Extreme adventure on the hilly roads with Maruti Wagon R! Lava to Rishap—one of the most exciting and offbeat road trips in North Bengal. The land of clouds, pine forests and a magical touch of the Himalayas! Welcome everyone to our great and exciting road trip today. Today we will not go on any ordinary tarred highway. Today our car wheels will kick up dust on the way to a hidden paradise in North Bengal—we are going from Lava to Rishap. This small hill village of Rishap in Kalimpong district, which is famous for its solitude and the magnificent view of Kanchenjunga. But the road to reach this quiet village is as dangerous as it is beautiful. This road is only 11 kilometers long, but there is extreme thrill and adventure hidden around every corner. If you love off-roading, then this road is an absolute treat for you. And if you are afraid of driving in the mountains, this road will make you shiver. The first 1-2 kilometers of the road may give you some relief. A tarmac road, a slight climb. But the real game will start a little later. The road starts to change shape from the checkpoint or forest section at the entrance to the main road to Rishop. The tarmac sheet moves away and a rough path of boulders, gravel and raw earth comes under your feet. This is where our real off-road trip begins. The more the car moves, the more the forest seems to swallow us. The nature of this region seems to be completely primitive, untouched. Centuries-old pine, incense, oak and rhododendron trees stand in rows on both sides of the road. When we come in spring, this road is colored with red rhododendrons, and at other times it is a mysterious green tunnel. The weather in Rishop is very capricious from lava. It might be a hot day, and then the next moment it will be covered in thick white fog. When the fog swallows the road, it becomes difficult to see anything 5 meters ahead. The temperature here is quite pleasant and cool all year round. Even in summer, the temperature does not easily rise above 15 to 18 degrees Celsius. And in winter? The mercury drops to 3 to 4 degrees, sometimes even touching the freezing point at night. So, if you are going on this trip, it is mandatory to carry warm clothes. Now let's come to the most important and exciting part of this road trip—the type of road. It would be wrong to call this 11-kilometer route from Lava to Rishop a 'road', it is basically a 'boulder track' or rocky path. This road is made of large boulders or stones, on which driving a car is an endless circus! The most dangerous point here is the *'hairpin bend'* or sharp bends. There are at least 7 to 8 turning points on this road, where the road turns steeply upwards at an angle of about 80 to 90 degrees. When the car takes these turns, there is a big risk of the front wheels slipping on the rocks (Wheel Spin). This risk increases a hundredfold during the rainy season, because then slippery mud accumulates in the gaps between the rocks. A slight miscalculation, and the car goes straight into a ditch! There are no dividers or guardrails on the mountain in most parts of this road, so every second is extremely cautious here. Driving on this road is not the job of a new or ordinary driver. It requires *'pro-level' hill driving skills* and perfect experience on mountain roads. *Type of car:* If you want to bring your own car, then remember—don't make the mistake of bringing a hatchback or sedan with low ground clearance here. The chances of the lower part of the car hitting the rocks and breaking are 100%. This road requires an SUV or four-wheel drive (4x4 / AWD) vehicle with high ground clearance. When you see the local drivers of Lava crossing this road in their Bolero, Sumo or Scorpio, you bow your head in respect. After a bone-chilling and exciting journey of about 1 hour, when the forest ends and small wooden houses and homestays appear before your eyes, you will know that you have arrived at Rishope. A peaceful paradise located at an altitude of about 8,500 feet above sea level. The tranquility that touches your mind as soon as you get out of the car will wash away all the fatigue of this road in a second. And if you are lucky and the sky is completely clear, then the majestic *Kanchanjangha* will spread its wings above your head. After seeing this form of the snow-white Himalayas spread across 180 degrees, you will feel that every second of crossing this dangerous and difficult road was worthwhile. After the hardships, the real joy comes! Well, this road trip from Lava to Rishop teaches us that not only the destination, but also the journey can be beautiful and exciting. The nature here is rugged, yet at the same time wonderfully peaceful. How did you like our off-road journey today? Be sure to tell us in the comments. Will you dare to drive on this road?
