How a Spouted Matcha Bowl Is Made (Full Process)

In this video, I make a set of 12 spouted Matcha Bowls for a matcha café in Berlin - from preparing the clay to the final wood-fired pieces. These bowls are designed to do two things: whisk matcha and pour it into another vessel. The form is based on the proportions and functionality of a traditional chawan, but with a spout added for pouring. I throw each bowl on the pottery wheel using 450g of locally sourced white stoneware. After throwing the basic form, I shape and refine the spout by hand. The next day, the bowls are trimmed and the foot and spout are finished. The bowls are glazed with Shino and fired in a traditional wood-fired kiln. The firing takes around 20 hours, allowing the glaze and clay to react with the atmosphere, flame and wood ash inside the kiln. The final pieces have subtle differences from one another while remaining part of the same set.
