What does a P value actually mean?
It is one of the most commonly used — and commonly misunderstood — concepts in medical research.
In this video, we build the intuition behind the P value using simple examples, without starting with complicated statistical theory.
You'll understand:
• Why random chance matters in research
• What the null hypothesis H₀ means
• The intuition behind the P value
• How to interpret P = 0.03
• What “our result or something more extreme” means
• Why a small P value provides evidence against the null model
• Why P = 0.03 does NOT mean there is a 3% chance that H₀ is true
• What a P value can — and cannot — tell you
The central idea is:
Assume there is no real effect.

How surprising would our observed data — or something more extreme — be?

P VALUE
A P value describes the probability of obtaining data at least as extreme as those observed assuming the null hypothesis and statistical model are true.
It does not directly tell you:
the probability that the null hypothesis is true.
This is Part 1 of our P-value explanation.
