How did 24Seven go from one of India's most recognizable convenience-store chains to suddenly shutting its stores?
Founded around the idea of round-the-clock convenience, 24Seven built more than 145 stores and kiosks and became famous across Delhi-NCR and other markets for late-night groceries, snacks, coffee, ready-to-eat food and everyday essentials.
But despite hundreds of crores in sales, the economics underneath the business remained difficult.
Premium rents, 24-hour staffing, electricity, inventory, food wastage and operating costs made profitability challenging. Then COVID changed consumer behaviour—and Blinkit, Zepto and Swiggy Instamart brought instant convenience directly to people's homes.
By FY24, 24Seven's retail division reported ₹403 crore in revenue from operations and had a negative net worth due to accumulated losses. In April 2024, parent company Godfrey Phillips decided to exit the business.
In this video, we break down:
• How Samir Modi built 24Seven
• Why the 24-hour convenience-store idea looked revolutionary
• 24Seven's aggressive expansion plans
• How COVID changed its customers
• The rise of Blinkit, Zepto and quick commerce
• Why strong sales didn't translate into sustainable profits
• The Modi family dispute surrounding the exit
• Why Godfrey Phillips finally pulled the plug
• And what really killed 24Seven
But here's the biggest irony:
24Seven correctly predicted that Indians would pay for instant convenience.
It simply predicted the wrong way they would consume it.
The locations themselves didn't completely disappear either. By February 2025, The New Shop had already rebranded and franchised around 35 former 24Seven stores, with the acquisition giving it access to roughly 100 ready locations.
24Seven wasn't killed by a lack of customers.
It was killed by the inability to turn convenience into sustainable economics before a faster, more asset-light version of convenience took over.
