Super Star Wars, a run-and-gun action game developed by Brain Bug and produced by Softgold in 1994, is an ambitious PC port of the beloved Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) title. Originally conceived as a passion project by Danish developer Sam Nova, the game aimed to bring the iconic Star Wars universe to life on PCs with enhanced graphics, sound, and gameplay mechanics. You step into the boots of Luke Skywalker, navigating through meticulously redesigned levels that mirror the events of Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope. The game features vibrant, recrafted visuals that push beyond the SNES’s color limitations, and it introduces a stunning fake 3D effect during the climactic Death Star trench run.
The development journey was nothing short of remarkable. Sam Nova and the Brain Bug team reverse-engineered the SNES code, converting it entirely into PC-compatible assembler while improving the graphics and audio. The soundtrack, originally limited by the SNES hardware, was reimagined for AdLib, MIDI, and WAV formats, delivering a richer auditory experience. Despite the team’s dedication and the game’s near-completion, LucasArts ultimately canceled its release due to a shift in management and a change in their Star Wars game strategy. This decision left a brilliant and nearly finished product in the shadows, though leaked versions have allowed enthusiasts to experience this hidden gem.
Super Star Wars on PC stands as a testament to the creativity and technical prowess of its developers. It captures the essence of the original film and the SNES game while pushing the boundaries of what was possible on early PC hardware. The game’s legacy lives on, not just as a canceled project, but as a symbol of what could have been—a thrilling adventure that immerses you in the Star Wars universe like never before.
The music, composed by Thomas Egeskov Pedersen, adds an extra layer of nostalgia and excitement, perfectly complementing the action on screen.
