Resident Evil: The George Romero Movie We Never Got

In 1998, Constantin Film hired George A. Romero to write and direct Resident Evil. He turned in a script that put Jill Valentine and Chris Redfield at the center, kept the Arklay mansion, the Hunters, the Tyrant, and the game's ending, and he was fired over it. What got made instead was Paul W. S. Anderson's original zombie script Undead with the Resident Evil license bolted onto it, and that version launched a six-film, billion-dollar franchise. This essay puts the two versions side by side and argues that Romero's didn't die for being a bad adaptation. It died for being a faithful one.
