Scottish canals

As part of my recent hike on the John Muir Way I came across some unusual bits of historical and modern architecture. First up was the Radical Pend at Bonnybridge. When the Forth & Clyde Canal was initially built around 1786, this was the only way for pedestrians and carts to cross to the other side. It was only in 1900 that a lifting bridge was put in to make passage easier. Next, the Falkirk Wheel, the world’s only rotating boat bridge. It moves boats from the Forth & Clyde Canal to the Union Canal. I had ridden the lift in 2022:    • Falkirk Wheel   Finally, the Avon Aqueduct on the Union Canal. This is 247 metres long and 86 feet (26 metres) high, it is the longest and tallest aqueduct in Scotland. It is the second longest in Britain.
