Parachute Malfunction Mid-Skydiving - Emergency Cutaway Saved My Life!

Kris did an amazing job with his emergency procedures as taught by the wonderful instructors at skydive Deland. The main takeaways from the video are; When do we cut away or chop a main canopy? First thing we want to do after deployment is a Canopy Check; We always do Canopy control checks above 2,500 feet Now how do I do a canopy control check? Great question; 6 main things to keep in mind: Is it there? Is it square? (3/4 or 75% above your head) Do I float / have a silent feeling? Am I NOT spinning? Can I Flare? Can I turn Left / Right? If the answer is YES; keep it If the answer is NO… Let’s talk Function Vs Malfunction Function (meaning it works) vs Malfunction (the canopy is not working or fixable i.e. I can’t land or steer this canopy correctly) Common minor malfunctions that are fixable; Line twists Slider stuck all the way up Closed end cells These are no reason to cut away; if you’d like a video of how to deal with these minor malfunctions comment below Now let’s go back to a canopy control check; Is it there? Is it square? Do I float? Am I NOT spinning? Can I Flare? Can I turn Left / Right? If the answer is NO by 2,500 feet, the “Hard Deck”, then you cut away you’re main parachute and continue with emergency procedures after just like Kris did in this video! Kris is a perfect example of what do to during a canopy malfunction and or emergency and we are all glad he walked away uninjured.
