The main barracks opened in 1939 and the housing estate was added in the 1960s and 70s, serving continuously until the site was officially decommissioned in 1992 and sold to Annington Homes. The last families moved out around 1997 when every house was boarded up and shuttered, and while the rest of the base was redeveloped for new homes in 2003–2004, Old Park Close was left completely untouched.
