In 1894, Nicholas II inherited one of the most powerful empires on Earth. The Romanov dynasty had ruled Russia for nearly 300 years, and more than 125 million people lived under his crown.
Just 24 years later, the empire was gone.
How did a monarchy that survived wars, assassinations, rebellions, and generations of political change collapse in the lifetime of a single ruler?
This documentary follows the extraordinary downfall of Nicholas II — from his unexpected rise to the Russian throne and the tragedy of Khodynka Field to the Russo-Japanese War, Bloody Sunday, the 1905 Revolution, Rasputin, World War I, and the revolution that finally ended Romanov rule.
Nicholas inherited an empire already under enormous pressure, but his decisions would repeatedly place the monarchy in even greater danger. As war, poverty, political unrest, and revolution spread across Russia, the throne that once seemed untouchable began to fall apart.
By 1917, Nicholas II was no longer Emperor of Russia.
By 1918, the man who had once ruled millions was a prisoner in Yekaterinburg.
This is the story of how one of history’s most powerful royal dynasties disappeared — and how the fall of Russia’s last Tsar brought an entire age to an end.
