Were Slavs present in Cyprus long before the Middle Ages? And could hundreds of Cypriot place names preserve traces of a much older linguistic layer? In this episode of The Slighthouse, we investigate one of the most intriguing historical mysteries of the eastern Mediterranean: the possible Slavic connection to ancient Cyprus. Using the Complete Gazetteer of Cyprus and the testimony of historians Victor Karayiannis and Aleksandar Mitić, we examine remarkable groups of Cypriot place names and compare them with words still recognizable across the Slavic-speaking world. LIVADA — meadow KAMEN — stone GLINA — clay LUG — grove / woodland CER — Turkey oak BROD — ford / river crossing Some of these connections have established historical explanations. Others raise difficult questions. We know that populations from the Balkans reached Cyprus during documented historical periods. But can medieval and later migrations alone explain hundreds of geographical names attached to fields, streams, hills, forests and other features across the island? Or could some belong to a considerably older linguistic layer? Налепљени маркдаун (1) This episode does not claim that linguistic similarity alone proves that ancient Cypriots were Slavs. Instead, we examine the evidence, the conventional explanations and the alternative interpretation—and ask a simple question: How old are the Slavic-looking names of Cyprus? Watch to the end and decide for yourself. 💬 What do you think?
