Perspective :CLIMATE-RESILIENT WATER MANAGEMENT | 21 September, 2026

The climate is changing. And with it, the water equation is changing faster than ever. Rainfall is becoming more unpredictable. Intense rainfall can bring floods, while long dry spells can put entire regions under water stress. Cities are having to deal with both extremes - managing excess water when it rains heavily, and ensuring adequate supplies when it doesn’t. For agriculture, industry and communities, this means one thing – that the old ways of managing water are being tested by a new climate reality. So, the question is no longer simply how we conserve water. Can we make our water systems resilient enough to deal with greater uncertainty? That is the focus of the 9th India International Water Week, being held in New Delhi from September 22 to 26, with “Climate Resilient Water Management” as its central theme. The idea of resilience goes beyond technology. It is about how governments and institutions plan, how cities manage water, how farmers use it, how communities participate - and how science and innovation can help us prepare for risks before they become crises. And because water cuts across sectors and administrative boundaries, building resilience also means bringing different stakeholders to the same table - policymakers, scientists, industry, researchers, civil society and water users. So, what does climate resilience actually mean on the ground? Are our existing water systems equipped for the extremes we are already witnessing? And what needs to change - in policy, in terms of technological advancements, in ways of governance, but most importantly, behavioural change in people - to secure water for the future?
