At 72, Russ Taff Reveals the Secret He Hid Through Six Grammy Wins — He Told It Himself In 2018, the story of Russ Taff’s life appeared on more than 700 movie screens across America—for one night only. Then it was gone. The film revealed a side of one of gospel music’s most celebrated voices that audiences had rarely seen: for decades, Russ believed he did not deserve any of the honors he had received. His career includes six Grammy Awards, sixteen Dove Awards, and three separate inductions into the Gospel Music Association Hall of Fame—as a solo artist, a member of The Imperials, and a member of the Gaither Vocal Band. No one else has been inducted in all three capacities. Yet success could not silence the pain Russ carried. According to his own account, his drinking did not begin during a career setback or personal crisis. It began on the night he received his first Grammy—because he could not believe the award truly belonged to him. This video follows Russ’s journey from a twenty-member Pentecostal church in Farmersville, California, to his place in The Imperials and eventually the baritone chair in the Gaither Vocal Band. It also takes us inside a theater in Franklin, Tennessee, where Russ sat alongside Bill Gaither, Mark Lowry, Amy Grant, and Michael W. Smith as some of the most painful moments of his life unfolded on the screen. Along the way, we examine what the filmmakers revealed about his childhood and both of his parents, the words from Tori Taff that finally reached him, and how Bill Gaither’s response to Michael English in 1994 helps explain who is welcomed back onto the Homecoming stage—and why. This is not simply the story of an extraordinary gospel career. It is the story of shame, addiction, grace, and a man learning to believe that restoration was still possible.
