For two hundred years, Rachel Jackson's marriage to Andrew Jackson was explained as an honest mistake.
She died on December 22, 1828, seventy-two days before her husband took office, and was buried in the white gown she had bought for the inauguration. Andrew Jackson blamed his political enemies. The record can show what he believed. It cannot show what caused her death.
But a Tennessee court document dated January 28, 1791 already lists her as Rachel Jackson, more than two years before a Kentucky jury dissolved her first marriage.
So who built the story we were told, and what did it leave out?
In this documentary, we follow the paper trail — a 1785 marriage bond, a 1790 Virginia act, a 1791 estate inventory, a 1793 jury verdict — and ask what the documents show, and what they do not.
