The "Defence" Rides On! - pirate sea song, historical

In early 1697 the crew of the East India Company's frigate "Mocha" was sailing from Bombay toward China when the men decided to mutiny. The mutiny occurred off the coast of Acheen, where the crew turned against their commander, Captain Edgecombe. The mutineers killed the captain and seized control of the ship. They then placed twenty-seven officers and sailors who refused to join them into the ship's pinnace. The mutineers renamed the "Mocha" the "Defence". The change of name symbolized the complete break between the vessel's former legitimate service and its new existence as a pirate ship. The newly formed pirate crew did not immediately disappear after one raid. Instead, the "Defence" remained active in the Indian Ocean for approximately three years. Its transformation was part of a larger wave of piracy that followed news of Henry Every's spectacular success.
