Why does a father sit alone in the driveway long after he's already home? "Man at the Wheel" is an indie folk-pop song about a boy who used to watch his dad through the window — headlights cutting through the rain, painting yellow ghosts on the windowpane, the man carved into the driver's seat like a statue, forehead on the wheel, keys still in his hand, engine ticking while he washed the salt of the world away before he could face the "How was your day?" He wasn't a pillar of stone — he was an island in the middle of the street, a man out of breath between the lion at the desk and the father at the door, a sailor trying to find the shore, with a canyon in the middle swallowing the man he was keeping inside. Now the narrator is forty-five, sitting in a silence of his own, carrying the same two masks — one for the paycheck, one for the home-ship — and understanding at last: he thought his father was strong because he never cried; he didn't know he was just staying alive inside. Against the old orders — "Be the provider! Be the rock! Be the wall!" — the song ends as an apology across the years: "I see you now, Dad. I'm sorry I didn't know you were just trying to breathe." If you've ever watched a parent hold it together in silence — or sat in your own car gathering yourself before you could walk through the door — this one's yours. Have you ever taken those few quiet minutes in the driveway, just trying to breathe before going inside? Tell us your story in the comments. LYRICS [Verse 1] I remember the headlights cutting through the rain Painting yellow ghosts on the windowpane I’d press my nose to the glass, a boy in the hall Watching the silhouette that cast such a shadow on the wall "Why’s he just sitting there?" I’d whisper to the air Mom was in the kitchen, pretending not to care But you were carved in the driver’s seat, a statue of a man With your forehead on the wheel and the keys still in your hand. [Pre-Chorus] The engine ticking like a clock that’s lost its mind Leaving the ghost of the office and the boss behind But you weren’t ready for the "How was your day?" You were still washing the salt of the world away. [Chorus] Oh, you were an island in the middle of the street The only patch of earth where the two tides meet Not a pillar of stone, just a man out of breath Running a race that was scaring him to death Between the lion at the desk and the father at the door You were just a sailor trying to find the shore And the gap in the middle was a canyon so wide It was swallowing the man you were keeping inside. [Verse 2] Now I’m forty-five, sitting in a silence of my own Mapping out the miles of the life that you’ve flown I see the two masks we carry in our grip One for the paycheck, one for the home-ship And neither one fits the skin we are born in We sit in the dark ‘til the edges are worn in I thought you were strong because you never cried I didn't know you were just staying alive inside. [Bridge] It wasn't a choice! It was a desperate hold! Trading your spirit for a story you were told! "Be the provider! Be the rock! Be the wall!" But how does a mountain keep from feeling the fall? You were suffocating in the space between the gears! Losing yourself to the quiet of the years! [Outro] I see you now, Dad. Through the rain on the glass. The five-minute mercy. The shadows that pass. I’m sorry I didn't know you were just trying to breathe. We're just trying to breathe...
