Why Tens of Thousands Return to Ukraine’s Sacred Graves Every Autumn

Every year, tens of thousands of Hasidic and Breslov Jews travel back to small towns across Eastern Europe. Not to move there. Not because their families still live there. But to pray at graves connected to some of the most important figures in Hasidic Jewish history. Uman. Lizhensk. Medzhybizh. Before World War II, towns like these were part of the spiritual heartland of Hasidic Judaism. By 1945, much of that Jewish world had been destroyed. Soviet rule then made large-scale pilgrimage from the West extraordinarily difficult for decades. Yet after the collapse of the Soviet Union, something remarkable happened. The pilgrimages returned. Today, Uman in Ukraine becomes the destination for tens of thousands of pilgrims around Rosh Hashanah, while smaller pilgrimages continue to historic Hasidic sites across Poland and Ukraine. In this documentary, we explore why these places still matter, what pilgrims actually do there, how local economies have developed around the annual arrivals, the tensions and cooperation these gatherings can create, and why many young pilgrims feel deeply connected to places where they have no personal family roots at all.
