The 2000 presidential election became one of the closest and most controversial elections in American history—but the story began long before Florida. This video takes a detailed look at the entire 2000 presidential campaign, beginning with the fight for the nominations. Vice President Al Gore faced an unexpectedly serious Democratic primary challenge from former New Jersey Senator Bill Bradley, while Texas Governor George W. Bush entered the Republican race as the overwhelming establishment favorite—only to face a fierce challenge from Senator John McCain. We follow the Republican battle through New Hampshire, South Carolina, Michigan, and Super Tuesday, including the bitter Bush–McCain confrontation, controversial attacks and rumors, the South Carolina push-poll controversy, Bob Jones University, and the eventual collapse of McCain's campaign. On the Democratic side, we examine Bradley's challenge to Gore, the Clinton administration's complicated political legacy, and how Gore emerged from the primaries trying to define himself independently of Bill Clinton. Then comes Bush vs. Gore. The video follows the general election from the conventions through the final hours of the campaign: Gore's post-convention surge, Bush's recovery, the three presidential debates, Gore's struggle with his public image, Bush's efforts to present himself as a "compassionate conservative," internal disputes over Gore's campaign strategy, Ralph Nader's increasingly important candidacy, and the constant battle over which candidate could win the handful of states that would ultimately decide the presidency. It also examines many of the controversies that shaped the campaign, including questions surrounding Bush's past, Gore's reputation for exaggeration, the infamous "RATS" advertisement, campaign-finance controversies, foreign-policy crises, the late revelation of Bush's 1976 DUI arrest, and the difficult question of how—and how much—Gore should use President Clinton during the campaign. Polling throughout the campaign shows just how unstable the race could be, as the advantage shifted repeatedly between Bush and Gore before the country reached Election Day virtually divided in half. And then came Florida. The election would ultimately produce a 36-day struggle over recounts, disputed ballots, lawsuits, and the meaning of Florida's extraordinarily close result, culminating in Bush v. Gore and George W. Bush becoming the 43rd president of the United States. This is the story of Bush vs. Gore, the primaries that produced them, the campaign that divided the country, and the election that came down to a few hundred votes. #BushVsGore #Election2000 #GeorgeWBush #AlGore #PoliticalHistory #ElectionHistory #BillClinton #JohnMcCain #BillBradley #RalphNader #FloridaRecount #2000Election
