In this video you can enjoy the cab ride - train driver's view from Kiato to Piraeus in 4K/60 frames per second.
Kiato station sits at the eastern edge of the Peloponnese, where the electrified Proastiakos network ends and non-electrified services continue west along the southern shore of the Bay of Corinth toward Aigio. From here, the A4 line of the Athens Suburban Railway — Proastiakos — runs 120.7 km to Piraeus across 20 stops, a corridor whose standard-gauge, 25 kV AC infrastructure replaced a much older metre-gauge alignment. The Piraeus, Athens, and Peloponnese Railway Company, founded in 1882, first brought rail to this coastline, reaching Corinth in 1885 before the network was nationalised in 1954 and absorbed by OSE in 1962. The modern line through to Corinth opened on 27 September 2005, with the Corinth-to-Kiato extension completed in 2007 and electrification finished in 2018, after which the route switched exclusively to the Class 460 Siemens Desiro Classic EMUs seen in this footage. The line is designed for up to 200 km/h on the Corinth–Kiato stretch, dropping to up to 160 km/h for the remainder toward Athens.
Leaving Kiato, the line runs close to the A8 Athens–Patras highway with the Bay of Corinth a few kilometres to the north. After calling at Corinth station, the route crosses the Corinth Canal — cut in 1893 between the Saronic and Corinth bays — and enters Attica, passing through the Kakia Skala I tunnel at 2,385 m and the Kakia Skala II tunnel at 1,527 m as the railway and highway squeeze between the Geraneia Mountains and the Saronic Gulf. Stations at Megara and Nea Peramos mark this coastal stretch, before the line swings inland to join the median of the A6 Attiki Odos highway — itself built for the 2004 Summer Olympics — and passes the Thriasio Pedio freight yard, the largest marshalling yard in the Greek rail network.
Beyond Aspropyrgos and Ano Liosia, the route threads the SKA junction, where suburban lines diverge toward the airport and northern Greece, before entering the dense northern suburbs of Athens on a quad-track section through Kato Acharnai and Agioi Anargyroi. A passage through central Athens leads to Larissa station, the main Athens railway terminus, before the final stretch descends slowly through street-level Athens — with its many road-level crossings — past Rouf, Tavros, Rentis, and Lefkas. The journey closes at Piraeus station, the port terminus where ferries and cruise ships crowd the quays, completing a ride that moves from the open agricultural hinterland of the Peloponnese coast to the dense maritime heart of Greece's largest port.
