Why can something that happened years ago still trigger anger today?
In this video, we explore the psychology behind grudges, resentment, emotional memory, and why the mind sometimes refuses to let an old hurt go.
Researchers and psychologists such as Robert Enright and Fred Luskin helped establish forgiveness as an area of psychological research, exploring how unresolved resentment can affect emotional and physical well-being. Susan Nolen-Hoeksema studied rumination and found that repeatedly dwelling on negative experiences can strengthen negative emotions. Roy Baumeister and colleagues examined the tendency for negative experiences to have a stronger psychological impact than positive ones, often described as the negativity bias. We also explore Robert Trivers' theory of reciprocal altruism and how sensitivity to betrayal and unfairness may have developed alongside the importance of cooperation.
The deeper idea is simple: sometimes holding on isn't about being bitter. It can be the brain's attempt to protect you from being hurt again.
