Zip, SuperDisk, Hi-FD and the Floptical were all built to replace the 1.44 megabyte floppy, and every one is gone while the floppy still turns inside working machines. This is why the bigger, faster challengers vanished before the format they set out to kill.
IBM shipped the first floppy drive in 1971, and by 1986 the disk held 1.44 megabytes. Each challenger beat that number and still lost, because a removable disk is only worth something if the person you hand it to can read it. The Zip came closest, with more than eleven million drives shipped, until a repeating click and a class action cost it that trust. The recordable CD and the USB flash drive won by using drives and sockets every computer already had.
You will learn:
• Why the Floptical and SuperDisk could not find a second reader
• How Sony stranded its own earliest Hi-FD buyers
• What the Zip clicking lawsuit alleged, and how it settled
• Why an eight megabyte flash drive beat them all
• Why nuclear forces, airliners and a San Francisco subway kept floppies
If you ever labelled a floppy by hand or heard a Zip drive start clicking, share what you remember in the comments.
