Fall asleep tonight inside the largest private house in America. Biltmore has 250 rooms, 43 bathrooms, 65 fireplaces and more than 4 acres of floor under a single roof, and in the 1890s roughly 30 to 40 servants kept all of it running for a family of three. The house made its own electricity from a 15-kilowatt generator, held 2,000 ampere hours of it in a battery bank so the lamps never went dark, and from 1901 bought Asheville's surplus night current off a streetcar grid that was standing still in its sheds. Four coal-fired boilers burned 24 hours a day so that hot water at 200 degrees was simply the condition of the building. This is one ordinary evening inside it, from the hour the light goes off the mountains until every bed in the house is full.

In this video, we talk about what a night inside Biltmore House actually involved, including the tea ritual in the 90-foot Tapestry Gallery, the warm water carried up the back stairs to bedrooms that had no sinks, Edith Vanderbilt's handwritten place cards, a banquet table set for 64 with 18 people at it, the 18 pieces of silver and glass at each place, the 1,139 napkins in 62 patterns, the electric dumbwaiter that moved a course 38 feet in 23 seconds, the three kitchens and the spit turned by a wall dial, the wine cellar behind its grated iron door, the boiler room that never went cold, the housekeeper Emily King who earned double the butler, the night watchman's round, and the 21 small rooms under the roof where the women who ran the house finally slept.
