I flew my Cessna to northeast Georgia for the Tugaloo Triathlon, stayed in a yurt at Tugaloo State Park, and expected a pretty simple fly-race-fly-home weekend. Instead, a damaged airplane window, rental-car problems, storms, and an 11-mile Onewheel ride back to the airport turned this into a completely different adventure.
And somewhere in the middle of all that… I still had a triathlon to race.
The plan sounded simple: load the bike into the airplane, fly to northeast Georgia, grab the rental car, spend the weekend at Tugaloo State Park, race the triathlon, and fly home.
But the weekend started changing almost immediately.
I damaged a rear window while loading the airplane. The rental car couldn’t be delivered to the airport, which meant my Onewheel went from “backup transportation” to an actual part of the plan. Rain changed what I had envisioned for the yurt and camping experience. Then, after the race, my Sunday ride back to the airport disappeared — leaving me with roughly 11 miles between me and my airplane.
So I got on the Onewheel.
Country roads. Wet dirt. Cows. A battery that decided it was about finished before I was. And a lot of figuring things out as I went.
That’s really what Henry’s Out There is about.
I love aviation. I love fitness. But more than either one, I love the idea that an airplane can make your world bigger — giving you the ability to combine flying with races, outdoor adventures, interesting destinations, and experiences you probably wouldn’t have had otherwise.
And sometimes the part you didn’t plan becomes the best part of the story.
If you enjoy general aviation, destination races, triathlons, outdoor adventures, or simply getting out there and trying something different, I’d love to have you along for the journey.

And tell me in the comments: What’s the craziest “backup plan” you’ve ever had to turn into Plan A?
