“If You Can’t Afford Harare, Move to Rural Areas” — My Honest Response

Zimbabwe is having an important conversation about the cost of living, housing, inequality and who has the right to live and work in Harare. Recently, Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume made comments suggesting that people who can no longer afford to live in Harare should consider moving to smaller towns, growth points or rural areas. In this video, I share my honest thoughts on those remarks and the bigger issue behind the debate. Should struggling Zimbabweans simply leave Harare because they cannot afford the rising cost of living? Or should we be asking bigger questions about affordable housing, employment, opportunities and equality for all Zimbabweans? I believe Zimbabwe belongs to all Zimbabweans — whether someone lives in Harare, Bulawayo, a small town or the rural areas. This is not about attacking anyone. It is about having an honest conversation about the Zimbabwe we want to build and whether economic circumstances should determine who gets to enjoy opportunities in our cities. I also talk about the situation in Zimbabwe, the challenges ordinary people are facing, the rural-urban divide, and why we need solutions that give people dignity and opportunity wherever they live.
