In this profound teaching from The Jewel Ornament of Liberation (Chapter 13 Part 4), His Eminence Chogyal Rinpoche gently explains that moral ethics are the foundation of the Bodhisattva path. Moral ethics are not only about rules, but about training the mind and protecting one’s spiritual practice. The definition of moral ethics includes four key qualities: receiving the precepts correctly from a qualified teacher, maintaining pure motivation, restoring one’s practice if it declines, and keeping mindfulness and respect so the practice does not weaken. These four qualities can be summarized as receiving and protecting the precepts. Gampopa also teaches that moral ethics have three main classifications. The first is the moral ethics of restraint, which means guiding and controlling the mind in a wholesome way. The second is the morality of accumulating virtuous Dharma, which helps positive qualities grow and mature within the mind. The third is the morality of benefitting sentient beings, which focuses on compassion and working for the welfare of others.
