Bend 8" schedule 40 PVC pipe using tools from PVC Bendit.
We added comments to this customer furnished video so you can see that it is possible to put a bend in PVC pipe up to 8" in diameter.
The customer designs and manufactures the most fantastic water shows in the World such as that at the Bellagio in Las Vegas.
They start by making their design form out of wood. They placed the PVC Bendit in the center of a few pieces of dryer vent hose which they banded and inserted into the PVC pipe. Doing this allow the Bendit to heat more uniformly. They also used fiberglass pipe insulation to cover the PVC pipe which keeps the heat in the pipe making it heat faster.
The Bendit was plugged into a Variac transformer which limits the high end of the heating temperature. The rotate the pipe when it gets hot as the bottom of the pipe will always get hottest and if it gets to hot will over soften making a poor bend.
It took around 75 minutes to get the desired temperature of 203 degrees Fahrenheit. The customer told us they should have let it get a little hotter so it would bend easier...next time.
Once the pipe was soft they removed the insulation and set the pipe against the form and used wood blocks to keep it in position while it cooled down.
PVC Pipe will cool quite fast so you need to work fast once you remove the PVC Bendit and insulation.
The desired radius in this application was 12 degree and they achieved this with little to no deformation of the pipe.
We are grateful to our customer for their cooperation in providing the bending portion of this video so we could share it with the world.
